The first victory of the second phase

The senior beat Igualatorio Cantabria Estela in a great third quarter

| Sunday, 17 March 2019

The senior yesterday achieved the first victory of the second phase against Igualatorio Cantabria Estela after starting with three defeats. Quim Costa’s men completed the first half from minus to plus and came to lead by 16 points in the second half. The wide race did not allow the surprise of the rival, who managed to reduce distances in the last minutes.

With the desire to get the first victory in front of the fans, the game of the senior began with the insistence of a triple rebound of Berry that ended up with a basket. The intimidating power of the American made the home team command from the paint. But the Estela would resist with a partial 0-9 in a demonstration of effectiveness inside and outside.  Quim Costa’s men managed to cut distances from the free kick, leaving the deficit at four points at the end of the quarter.

At the beginning of the second quarter,  the Igualatorio Cantabria Estela stretched the score to a maximum of nine points but three consecutive triples by the senior brought it closer to the game. A bolt from Bolton sealed the tie. The visiting team, who did not score in the last five minutes of the second quarter, would see how a triple from Sergi Costa put the locals ahead, after some good defensive minutes.

At the start of the second half, the senior didn’t lower his arms, quite the opposite. An 18-4 run extended the three-point advantage to sixteen before the break, with eleven points from a stellar Sergi Costa (22 rating). Estela managed to relativize Girona’s push with an 8-0 run that put them at eight points with ten minutes left.

A distance that the senior maintained in the last quarter, maintaining it from the paint with Trias leading (8 points) and Berry second (4). Dominance in this area was evident throughout the game from the rebound (16 offensive rebounds). Meanwhile, Estela did not give up, breaking the eight-point lead (62-57, 38′). A flick of Berry’s fingers would lighten the positive dynamic of the rival, making sure that the victory did not get away from Fontajau.

The next senior game will be at Aquimisa Laboratorios-Queso Zamorano on Saturday, March 23 at 5:00 p.m.

*Quim Costa’s assessment:

“It wasn’t a brilliant game from both teams. We were effective in the second half which allowed us to take a 16 point lead. However, we weren’t able to close the game and although they didn’t manage to get ahead, they did put fear in our bodies.”

“In the first phase we were playing match by match, with a regular game dynamic, but in this second phase we are playing with the need to return to the second position where we started the promotion phase and this has ignited a flame of restlessness within the team. I hope this victory will free us from this mental burden”
