Triumph in the premiere of the second phase in Fontajau

The senior overcomes a battling Juaristi

| Wednesday, 04 March 2020

Basketball Girona has opened the second phase in Fontajau with a meritorious victory against Juaristi ISB (77-65). Gerard Sevillano’s 21 points, with 10/11 field goals, helped overcome an opponent who, despite playing at a disadvantage in many phases of the duel, did not throw in the towel until the last moments of the game.

The good defense at the start of the match, added to a great offensive success, have allowed Básquet Girona to distance themselves. Girona’s defenses have prevailed on the floor and, at the same time, the Formento team has started flawlessly in attack. Albert Sàbat and Antonio Hester, with two triples, marked the first highlight of the night (12-0). The hits of Lowrance, Ierai and Beñat have cut from the outside line to 24-18.

In the second period, a block by Mor Niang and two baskets by Victor Moreno kept the pace of the Catalans and two additional shots by Robert Cosialls and Gerard Sevillano widened the difference in the score (39-23). At the beginning of the same quarter, the visiting squad was more demanding in attack, thanks in part to the great defensive performance of the home team. However, two Basque triples in a row have softened the Girona push (41-32).

In the resumption, a colossal Gerard Sevillano in attack increased the home score to 51-36, but the Gipuzkoa, intense in defense and solvent in attack, took advantage of each visit to the staff. Even so, Sergi Costa helped the team find the scoring momentum again to close the third quarter (62-47).

In the last period, Juaristi tried to drop from ten points but two versatile actions by Menno Dijkstra and a triple by Albert Sàbat gave the red team the definitive advantage to add the first victory (75-63) of the second phase in Fontajau.

The next match for the seniors is on Sunday March 8 at 18:30 against Cat&Restintragas-Clima CDP in Ponferrada.

*Alex Formento statements:

“Very satisfied with the match. At the beginning we set the trend we wanted. In different phases they came close, but because they are a magnificent team.”

“We play and build through our identity. The moment we lower this piston, we become another team. And we want to be Basketball Girona, we want to be recognisable.”
