The senior makes his debut in LEB Plata with a victory against Hestia Menorca
Básquet Girona has started the second year in LEB Plata with a victory against Hestia Menorca. The men trained by Àlex Formento have always been ahead of the scoreboard and have been decisive both in attack and defense (45 rebounds in total).
The senior took the first lead with two consecutive plays in the paint. The team led by Àlex Formento circulated fluidly inside (Hester 7 points) and outside (3/7). The opponent only responded with a single triple that left an initial difference of ten points (13-3). After the first time-out requested by the rival coach, Hestia Menorca referred from the triple (4/8). Even so, the locals also knew how to run on the counterattack, leaving a difference of five points in the first quarter (22-17).
In the second period, the senior stayed strong in the inside game. Menorca responded under the hoop but did not overcome the bar of five points below with good local defenses. When he tried to overcome him, Menno Dijkstra would keep the Girona team in tune with two consecutive three-pointers. Sevillano would round off the first half with a 2+1 that increased the difference to nine points (42-33).
At the restart, the defenses would become the epicenter of the match (the partial ended 12-12). The senior started with a partial 5-2 that established the maximum difference of twelve points. The opponent responded with two triples by Covington that left the difference at +6. The senior finished with better feelings both on his own field and on the opponent’s field and equaled the advantage with which he had reached the break (54-45).
In the last quarter, the team led by Àlex Formento continued to be strong at the back and knew how to add inside and outside in the offensive transition. Menorca tried to stay alive but saw how the locals always cut off their good momentum, also on the rebound (45). The victory was already a fact (69-60).
The next senior game is on Saturday 28 at the JAFEP FG La Roda court (7:00 p.m.).
* Statements by Àlex Formento:
“Congratulations to the players for an extraordinary job. We managed to minimize a team of great quality such as Menorca, keeping them in the right and adding from the rebound. I especially value the defensive communication on the first day.”
“Both teams have played their cards. We didn’t have a few minutes of concrete success, we knew how to keep calm and score from behind. There was no showy basketball, but we were intense in printing the physical accent that the game demanded. I am sure that Menorca will be a rival that will be at the top and will do things very well”
