Basketball Girona lost on the Juaristi ISB court (77-71) and ends the first season at LEB Plata

Girona Basketball said goodbye to the season yesterday at the Juaristi ISB court by losing 77-71 in a match where they almost always trailed. The partial 27 – 17 in the third quarter and the  points from an excellent Powell (23 points) were decisive to tilt the balance in favor of San Sebastian.  

The start of the match was an exchange of baskets between both teams, as the attacks lasted only a few seconds and there were many one-on-ones. As the minutes went by, however, Juaristi maintained their success, Básquet Girona had a harder time scoring and the team from Donostia was ahead at all times (18 – 14 minute 10).  

In the second period, the entry of Cizmic and Cosialls gave another gear to the Girona players who, with a faster game, precipitated the offensive actions of a rival who did not feel comfortable with the new rhythm of the game. Between the Croatian winger and the centre-forward from Sant Cugat they scored 13 points in the first five minutes and the partial 5-15 gave the team from Girona the maximum advantage (23-29 minute 15). However, the Gipuzkoans equalized the electronic with a new partial 7-1 in the last two minutes of the first half (30-30 minute 20).  

In the resumption, the two teams were vertical facing the ring but the men led by Lorenzo Encinas were more effective, since they nailed 5 triples with a Powell – 10 points in this quarter – on. Although Juaristi opened a gap of 13 points (57 – 44), a Bolton triple allowed Básquet Girona to enter with options in the last act (57 – 47 minute 30).

In the last quarter, the Girona team did not throw in the towel and with an intense defense they adjusted the score. The reward was almost complete when Leo Cizmic scored a triple that put his team within just one point (72 – 71 minute 39). In the next action, however, Powell responded from 6.75 and left the match doomed and a willful Básquet Girona who, with the defeat, were left with no options to play in the promotion play-offs.
