Mark Anthony Hughes (Youngstown, Ohio; 02/15/1997) is a new player for Bàsquet Girona for the upcoming season. The 1.99-meter-tall guard comes from Real Betis Baloncesto, where he played in the FEB Primera League. Hughes played for Wright State Raiders in college between 2015 and 2019. In his final college season, he averaged 9.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, shooting 75% from free throws and 33% from three-point range.

After his university days, he began his professional career in Europe with the Worcester Wolves of the English league. Later, he signed for Club Deportivo La Roda, of the LEB Plata. In the 2021/22 season he played in the LEB Or with ICG Força Lleida and, later, he played a season with Estudiantes de Madrid. In the 2023/24 season he played with the Hamburg Towers of the German league, where he also played in the EuroCup. In his last season before arriving at Bàsquet Girona, with Betis in the Primera FEB, he averaged 16.3 points, 4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, with 78.5% in free throws and 50% in three-pointers, playing an average of 28.7 minutes per game. He also participated in the play-offs and the Final Four for promotion to the ACB league, where he averaged 21.4 points, 5 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 29.5 minutes in the 7 games.

The American player was selected by the United States Basketball Association (USBA) in 2019 to play with the US U-22 team in an international tournament held in China.

Statements from Fernando San Emeterio, sports director: We are very happy with the incorporation of Mark. He is a player who has been working little by little and who has a similar trajectory to that of Bàsquet Girona: growing progressively, step by step. He is a player who went through La Roda in LEB Plata, then went to Lleida in LEB Or, and later went to Germany. Last season he really showed a dimension that allows him to take this step forward, which was also a goal that he set himself. He has improved a lot in generating play from the pick & roll, which makes him a much more versatile player. I would highlight his efficiency: he does not need to consume many possessions to generate points or assist his teammates. This efficiency and versatility are, precisely, the aspects that he will contribute the most to us.
