Girona Basketball closed the preseason with a solid victory over Napoli, winning with a high scoring rate and a cohesive play that made Fontajau vibrate in the first home game of the season. Moncho Fernández’s team gave the Italians no chance and ended up winning by 118 to 96.
Napoli, with a long-range shot, took the lead early in the game (3-11). Gradually, Bàsquet Girona reacted with an inspired Cameron Hughes, who scored 11 points, turning the score around (13-11). After the visiting timeout, Moncho Fernández’s team maintained their offensive success with Ferrando and Minda as the protagonists —6 and 7 points respectively— to establish the maximum difference (27-17). However, the Italian team responded and reduced the gap before the end of the first quarter (31-27).
The defensive pressure and transition play of Bàsquet Girona clearly overwhelmed the Italians, opening a significant gap in the scoreboard (46-27). The visiting timeout was unable to stop the inertia of the Girona team, who maintained a high pace and constantly punished the opponent’s spaces until they had a strong difference at halftime (70-42).
The change of pace meant a drop in intensity for the Girona team and Moncho Fernández was forced to call a timeout (75-47). His instructions had immediate effect and Bàsquet Girona regained their feeling in front of the basket, once again imposing a high pace in attack. Geben’s contribution near the rim (15 points) was key to widening the gap to 97-66.
With a big difference in the score and tired legs, Girona slowed down in attack and, as usual, Napoli took advantage of the opportunity to close the gap, with Flagg standing out (32 points, 99 to 76). That said, Moncho Fernández’s orders reactivated the team in attack, with Bàsquet Girona prevailing over Napoli by 118 to 96.
