Spar Girona returned to winning ways with a hard-fought victory over Innova-TSN Leganés (85-76). In a match marked by equality and constant changes of advantage, the Girona team failed to open a gap until the end of the last quarter, when defense and accuracy under the basket allowed Íñiguez’s team to break the game against a dedicated Fontajau.
The transition actions and the success of Quevedo and Mariam gave Spar Girona the first points. However, Leganés remained in the game thanks to the success of Dodson and Andelova. As the minutes progressed, Spar found its rhythm from the triple, imposing an 11-4 run that forced the visiting coach to stop the game (20-10). In the final stretch of the first quarter, the Madrid team reacted with points from Togores and Andelova, but the mid-range basket of the Girona team maintained the advantage at +5 (24-17).
The second quarter started with some defensive missteps that Leganés took advantage of to reduce the gap (30-28). However, after Roberto Íñiguez’s timeout, Spar regained control with a more cohesive game and Klara’s verticality as an offensive engine (38-31). Once again, Leganés closed the gap and took the lead on their last possession thanks to Herlihy’s triple (38-39). However, a foul 0.2 tenths of a second before halftime ended with two free throws converted by Amihere (40-39).
Leganés punished in the first action of the second half through Andelova (14 points). Spar’s points were slow to arrive and they did so as at the end of the second quarter, with Amihere from the free throw line (42-41). At this point, Herlihy took over the offensive responsibility of the visitors, placing the maximum difference for Leganés (47-51). However, Klara’s intensity and the entry of Canella allowed them to tie the duel at 51. Again, Innova-TSN gained momentum with a three-pointer from De Sancho and free throws from Herlihy, which forced Íñiguez to stop the game (51-56). The coach’s instructions had an effect, and the team’s defensive pressure, accompanied by Fontajau’s push, reversed the situation on the scoreboard (60-58). However, a final foul allowed Togores to tie from the free kick (60-60).
With everything at stake, the last quarter became a real battle, with a constant exchange of baskets and prominence for the three-pointers of Herlihy and Driessen, the actions of Carter and Klara and the 2+1 of Mariam (70-70). With Spar growing from the defense, the Girona team took a step forward with a layup and a three-pointer by Coulibaly, added to the two free throws by Carter, which forced the visiting coach to stop the game with 4:05 left (77-70). Dodson scored in transition and Fontajau came back to support his team, with two consecutive actions by Leti that made the score +9 (81-72). With only 1:24 left, Fort looked for a solution ‘in extremis’, but the assist of Juste to Mariam sentenced the duel and Spar Girona ended up winning by 85 to 76.
