Spar Girona faces the final match of the first phase of the EuroLeague Women on the complicated court of Bourges Basket this Wednesday (8 p.m., Esport3 and Ellas Vamos). The Girona team arrives after having defeated the French team in the first leg, 92 to 62, which marked one of the turning points of the season.
Bourges is a completely different team from the one that visited Fontajau. Since that defeat, they have not lost in either the French league or the Euroleague, and they arrive reinforced and in great shape. In addition, they recover Kariata Diaby, a fundamental inside piece who did not play in the first leg, and they have incorporated Monique Akora Makani, a high-level outside player with WNBA experience who was also not present in Girona.
Two players who significantly raise the physical, offensive and competitive potential of the French women in this last day of the phase.
Íñiguez’s team is facing the shift aware of the challenge and the value of each victory in the second phase. The coach explained that “when they played here [92-62] the bell rang for them. When you hit rock bottom you start to grow, from scratch, and since then they have not lost in either the French league or the Euroleague.”
And Íñiguez has made it clear that Bourges “is now a different team and at home they express themselves even better. It’s a cauldron, a beautiful field that I love going to. It’s a Euroleague classic, a very basketball court and you realize it when you get there. The team is the pride of the city and we know that for them it’s not the same to go to the second phase with 3 or 4. We would go through with 6 and they with 3 and the average is 4. It’s fundamental for them. They haven’t played and I’ve always said that from the window the level goes up a lot and we’ll see.”
The coach added that “this is a very long time, we have to continue growing and what we have done is no longer valid. We have to continue improving, doing new things. We are happy but knowing that what comes next will be more difficult. I know that winning or losing changes the perception from the outside but I focus on how the team works”.
