Spar Girona has won on the Flammes Carolo court by 68 to 83 in the second day of Phase 2 of the EuroLeague Women. Despite the initial advantage and the pressure of Carolo in the second quarter, the passage through the locker rooms has tipped the match in favor of the Girona team with a convincing 12 to 30 partial in the third quarter, thus adding the seventh victory in the EuroLeague Women.
The dominance of the offensive rebound, with six consecutive points from Coulibaly, the game in transition of Spar Girona and the triple of Juste have led the team of Roberto Íñiguez to impose an initial set of 2 to 13. The home stoppage has not changed the script of the match, with the Girona team solid in defense and with Coulibaly maintaining the accuracy in attack (10 points; 2-15). With the advantage in the score, Carolo has entered the match thanks to the baskets of Clarke and the mid-range shot of Jerome, which has forced Íñiguez to call a timeout (10-15). However, the final points of Madjo have placed the Flammes only three points behind, after a set of 12 to 2 (14-17).
The success of the home team continued in the second quarter with Dixon’s basket and, after several mistakes in attack, a three-pointer by Franchelin put Carolo ahead for the first time (19-17). Spar quickly reversed the situation with Mariam’s points and Jocyte’s three-pointer (19-22), but Franchelin’s baskets put the home team ahead again (25-22). Both teams made efforts to impose their style, turning the match into a constant exchange on the scoreboard, with Dixon tying the game at 30 points. Jerome put the French team ahead, but, after Madjo’s missed shots, Spar punished them with a three-pointer thanks to Jocyte (32-33).
The change of direction did not change the dynamics of the match, with a new constant exchange on the scoreboard and two three-pointers by Jocyte that put Spar Girona ahead by +3 (38-41). Franchelin had the opportunity to tie the game at 41 points, but missed the overtime, and Canella scored two consecutive points, in a good defensive stretch by the Girona team, to put the score at 40 to 45. Carolo reduced the gap from the personal line, but the entries of Mariam and Klara gave Spar a new cushion, forcing Flammes to call a timeout (42-49). However, Spar, clearly on the rise, did not let their good moment slip away and, taking advantage of the success of Amihere and Coulibaly, broke the game (42-58). The last French timeout did not change the dynamics and, again with points from Laeticia and Mariam, the Girona team extended their lead to impose a partial score of 12 to 30 in the fourth (44-63).
With a difference in the score, the efforts led both teams to score from the personal line (50-70). Then, after Clarke’s unsportsmanlike foul, Quevedo converted the free throws and, despite the distance, Carolo tried a last offensive to get closer, imposing a 10-2 run that forced Roberto Íñiguez to stop the game with four minutes to go (60-74). The instructions to attack the basket to take advantage of the local bonus were effective, with Mariam scoring from the free throw to reach 30 points (62-76). Jocyte maintained the momentum by scoring from the personal line, but two three-pointers by Strunc led Íñiguez to call a timeout to lead the last 53 seconds (68-78). The play ended in the hands of Jocyte, who scored a three-pointer and a shot from mid-range to certify the victory of Spar Girona by 68 to 83.
