Spar Girona has won the classic in Fontajau, defeating Perfumerías Avenida in a highly competitive match (77-60). After an even first half, the Girona team has grown from the second half with a very solid performance in defense and a choral game that has allowed them to control the rhythm of the clash and end up turning it in their favor.
The match started decaffeinated with Spar Girona being erratic in their shooting in the first minutes, a situation that the Castilians took advantage of to impose a 0-7 lead. With Roberto Íñiguez’s timeout, the Girona team found a way to approach by attacking inside the zone, finding solutions with Coulibaly and Bibby (6-9). Then, with Carol’s shots and Carter’s triple, Spar tied the game at 11, but the final 1-6 lead put the visitors ahead by 5 at the end of the first quarter (12-17).
Despite Meyers’ initial points, Quevedo’s triple and Carter’s entry led Montañana to stop the clash (17-19). The match was tied at its best, with Carter and Canella’s points standing out (22-23), but the bonus at 3:53 before the break allowed Avenida to differentiate themselves (24-30). With the timeout, Girona’s team regained ground with Jocyte penetrating the paint, which caused Montañana to pause again (26-30). Spar’s upward momentum was sustained with Juste, scoring from a triple to tie the clash at 30, and, in the last gasp of the second quarter, Lola put Girona ahead for the first time with an action under the basket (32-30).
The upward momentum continued at the start of the third quarter with Spar Girona being successful in attack, highlighting the team’s strong and vertical play (39-34). Vilaró and Soriano brought Perfumerías Avenida closer (41-38), but Klara and Carter’s passes and Guerrero and Lola’s shots again put the Girona team ahead (46-38). Despite Montañana’s timeout, Spar maintained their defensive solidity, but Quevedo’s technique and Roberto’s ejection put the visitors within five points (46-41). That said, Laura’s triple on the horn drove Fontajau crazy (49-41).
With Fontajau more fired up than ever, the players activated the direct shot to distance themselves from the clash, with the fans celebrating the actions of Marta, Quevedo and Lola (57-41). Having said that, and despite Montañana’s instructions, the Girona team did not lower their intensity and Canella, Coulibaly and Carter maintained their advantage (64-49). But with time still on the scoreboard, the actions of Soriano, vital in the final offensive game of the visitors, and Erikstrup’s basket led Sargatal to call a timeout (67-55). Shortly before the end, Marta’s basket, Carter’s triple and Bibby’s entry sentenced the clash, and Spar Girona won the classic by 77 to 60.
