Reaction and triumph in Mendizorrotza

Spar Girona | Saturday, 17 January 2026

Spar Girona has added a very meritorious victory on the Kutxabank Araski court ( 65-78 ), in a demanding and always complicated duel in Mendizorrotza. The Girona team built an initial advantage with criterion and offensive rhythm, but they were met with the reaction of Araski in the third quarter, when the home team adjusted the score. In the decisive section, Spar has once again shown character and solidity to sentence the match.

With Araski directly attacking the paint and achieving a slight initial advantage (6-5), the Girona team’s transition play and two triples from Quevedo put Spar ahead by +5 (7-13). Despite the Kutxabank timeout, Holm and Lola extended the lead from under the basket and, finally, points from Toussaint, Brotons and Holm allowed Girona to close the first quarter with an advantage (11-18).

The offensive dynamic intensified in the second quarter, with Araski scoring four three-pointers and Carol taking the offensive lead, converting four consecutive baskets (27-35). With Dornstauder bringing the Basques closer in the scoreboard, Carter’s three-pointer and Bibby’s final points, along with two baskets by Lola, made it 32-44 at halftime.

The greens surprised in the second half thanks to their accuracy, highlighting Morro’s points from long distance and Brotons’ effectiveness under the basket, imposing a 16-7 run to be only three points behind (48-51). Íñiguez stopped the clock at the halfway point of the third quarter and, although Lola slowed the run, Dornstauder and Jourdain tied the game at 53. Lola converted again to put the +3 on the scoreboard and, although Carter’s final basket seemed to give Spar a small margin, Hill’s point on the horn left Girona with a slight advantage (56-58).

Hill tied the game at 58 again and, although Chloe scored a layup, a 2+1 by Brotons put Araski ahead for the first time since the first quarter (61-60). Girona’s reaction was not long in coming: Klara’s free throws, Bibby’s 2+1 and his free throws, along with Quevedo’s layup, forced Madelen to stop the game (61-69). Hill cut back with two free throws, but Carol’s three-pointer from home silenced Mendizorrotza (63-72). Morro scored on the next play, but another layup by Chloe forced another local timeout with 1:42 left (65-74). From there, Holm’s transitions and final free throws extended the lead to a final score of 65-78.
