Girona City Council and Bàsquet Girona agree that, at a time like this for the city’s professional basketball teams, it is a priority to have facilities that are suitable for the demands of competition at the highest levels, both in terms of the use that athletes and technical staff must make of them and in terms of the experience of citizens, fans, followers and spectators.
The Fontajau pavilion was built 33 years ago. During these years, maintenance actions have been carried out. However, the passage of time, technical progress and sports activities make investment actions essential that can only be addressed through collaboration between the Girona City Council and Bàsquet Girona.
Given this situation, both institutions are working to make possible the future concession of the Fontajau pavilion to Bàsquet Girona as a formula that should allow, on the one hand, the improvement of the facility with investments, the promotion of sports activity and the revitalization of the pavilion, as well as the maintenance of its public ownership and the strategic role it plays in the promotion of the city and Girona sports.
Until this concession is a reality, Girona City Council is committed, within the responsibility it holds and within the framework of its powers, to take the necessary actions to guarantee that the sports activity that takes place in the pavilion can be carried out with full normality. These actions must allow situations like those experienced in some of the last matches to be avoided.
Regarding lighting, the City Council has been working for weeks on different alternatives to guarantee that there are no interruptions during matches. Specifically, the purchase of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is being finalized and the necessary actions are being taken so that until this UPS is purchased, the equipment has a generator that autonomously powers the pavilion during matches so as not to depend on the general network.
Similarly, the City Council and the club are collaborating on applications for European funding to improve lighting and modernize some technological aspects of Fontajau. Specifically, yesterday a project was presented for RedCyTI, a program to promote smart cities and territories to promote economic and productive development.
For its part, Bàsquet Girona has continued the process of consolidating the sports project, with the union between Bàsquet Girona and Uni Girona as its main milestone, which reinforces its sporting, social and economic value for the city.
