Spar Girona has been left just a breath away from the grand final of the LF Endesa after tying Fontajau (73-73) and taking Valencia Basket to the absolute limit. In front of 3,472 spectators who were 10 and created a very high-level atmosphere, Roberto Íñiguez’s team have competed with admirable identity and ambition, dominating the game for many minutes and having the classification in their hands in a last play that did not want to enter.
With Fontajau more alive than ever, after a start with exchanges (6-7), Spar Girona managed to impose its offensive rhythm with a 13-0 run to differentiate itself, highlighting the 9 points from Mariam (19-7). Little by little, Valencia woke up thanks to Fiebich and Hillman, but Girona’s dynamic was sustained with Lola’s points to close the quarter with an 8-point advantage (28-20).
With the change of quarters, the orange team has approached only 3 points (30-27), but an action by Jocyte for Mariam has stopped the half (32-27). That said, the success of the visitors, with Fiebich and Fam as protagonists, has reversed the situation to place a -4 on the scoreboard (39-43). The difference has not intimidated our team, who through Klara and Mariam have tied the result at 43, which has forced Burgos to stop the clash 2 minutes before the half. Fiebich has converted a triple to close the Valencian attack, while Klara has not missed the free throws to place 45 to 46 at halftime.
The change of pace in the locker room has awakened the Girona ambition and, with an action by Mariam, a triple by Quevedo and a transition by Klara, Burgos had to call a timeout (52-47). The orange reaction was not long in coming and Fam and Buenavida tied the game at 54. Shortly before the end and with Fontajau pressing, the crowd was ignited by a basket by Ainhoa, and despite Carrera’s equalizer from the personal, Klara’s final passes gave us a small advantage to close the third period (60-56).
With a lot of nerves, Queralt did not forgive the first Valencian attack (60-59). That said, Girona’s reaction was not long in coming and a tackle by Ainhoa and the magical actions of Klara drove Fontajau crazy (66-59), forcing Burgos to stop the game with 7:08 to go. Then, Mariam’s points put our team ahead (70-61), but the success of Fam, Carrera and Anderson brought the orange team closer again (70-67), which led Roberto to call a timeout with 3:18 to go. A three-pointer by Anderson tied the game at 70 and, immediately, Carrera put the visitors ahead +2. From the free throw line, Klara added a point and, shortly after, Mariam scored two to tie the tie (73-72). Shortly before the end, Anderson had the opportunity to score for Valencia, but the pressure from the crowd influenced her and she only scored a free throw (73-73). With 5 seconds left, Roberto designed a play that ended with Mariam under the basket, but the ball did not want to go in and Valencia secured access to the league final.
