FIATC Girona and Moncho Fernández have reached an agreement to extend the coach’s contract until June 2028. With this decision, the Girona-based entity reiterates its confidence in the project led by the Galician coach and is committed to the continuity of the stage that began on December 16, 2024.

Moncho Fernández (September 19, 1969, Santiago de Compostela) took over the leadership of the bench at a particularly demanding time for the team. Since his arrival, he has managed 57 official matches, in which he has consolidated himself as a fundamental part of the club’s sporting structure. Under his leadership, Bàsquet Girona has achieved the best trajectory of its recent history and has achieved, for the first time in the club’s history, the qualification to play in a European competition.

With 17 seasons of experience in the Endesa League and more than 500 games in the ACB elite, Fernández is one of the most experienced coaches in the competition. His service record highlights his historic period at Obradoiro, an entity he managed for 14 seasons and with which he achieved promotion to the top division in his first year.

The renewal ensures the solidity of the Bàsquet Girona sports project. The coach will continue at the helm of the team with the aim of consolidating the club in the Endesa League, facing the new European challenge with ambition and continuing to grow the entity in the coming years.

Statements from Fernando San Emeterio, sports director:

“We are very happy that this project will continue to be led by Moncho. It gives us great peace of mind to know that, at least, he will be with us for two more years (until 2028), to continue building together and hand in hand. We know perfectly well that, beyond the results, which have been positive, the day-to-day work is very good. The values that he knows how to transmit to the Bàsquet Girona players are exactly what we want for our project. We are delighted to have Moncho with us and, of course, so will the Girona fans, who love him very much. So, we will continue with Moncho, at least, for two more years.”
