SPAR Girona started the season with a narrow defeat against Movistar Estudiantes (82-79). After a good start and leading at halftime, the team had to row against the current for much of the second half, but was able to react in the final minutes and tie the score at 79. With everything to decide, the home team ended up winning the game with a shot from midfield on the horn.
SPAR Girona started the game with a good offensive rhythm and, despite being behind at times, reacted to turn the score around and reach the end of the first quarter with an advantage (16-24), highlighted by Carol’s 8 points. Despite the maximum at the beginning of the second quarter (16-28), Estudiantes reacted with a 13-2 run that allowed them to get back in front, in a section also marked by some Girona turnovers. SPAR Girona was able to respond and, with five consecutive points from Iyana Martín, went into the break ahead (39-41).
After the locker room, SPAR Girona extended their lead to 44-51, but Estudiantes responded with a three-pointer and turned the game around with a 9-0 run that put them ahead. The home team maintained control until the end of the third quarter and entered the last ten minutes with a six-point lead (62-56). In the final period, SPAR Girona trailed for much of the quarter, but continued to insist until they got back into the game. With Iyana and Carol as offensive leaders, the Girona team managed to tie the score at 77 and, after Lamana’s 79-77, Iyana tied it again at 79 with a drive to the basket. With just a few seconds left to play, Estudiantes scored a shot from midfield at the buzzer that made the final score 82-79.
