Spar Girona lost in the last match of the first round to Maloste ( 72-62 ). The Girona team started with a good rhythm and took the lead, but the Basque team gained momentum as the minutes passed and came up with options in the final stretch. In a last quarter with little offensive fluidity, Gernika took advantage of the moment to impose an 18-6 run and seal the victory.
Change of dynamics in the first part of the match, and if Spar was the first to strike (0-5), the local reply was not long in coming, with a 6-0 lead (6-5). With a lot of rhythm in the transitions, the focused attacks under the basket by Klara, Mariam and Bibby led Spar to distance themselves on the scoreboard (8-18). Gernika’s instructions had an effect, with baskets by Jankovic, Castedo and Westerik to adjust the result (15-18).
The upward momentum of the Basque team was maintained in the initial part of the second quarter thanks to the success of the outside shot, which forced Roberto Íñiguez to quickly stop the clash (22-21). The orders were effective and Spar Girona improved on both sides of the court, highlighting the 0-8 run led by Coulibaly to make it 26-31. Salvadores’ three-pointers brought Lointek closer, but Lola did not miss from the free throw line to maintain the advantage (29-33). The local timeout did not slow down our final momentum, with a choral and vertical game to widen the gap (30-41).
After the break, Gernika improved in attack, with Jankovic leading the home team to close the score (42-45). That said, Mariam’s dominance inside the game kept our team in check, extending the lead (44-51). Little by little, the home team accelerated again to adjust the score, with Castelo’s triple to impose a 10-5 lead and make it 54-56.
The fatigue in the legs was noticeable in the last quarter, and after Jankovic’s equalizer and Salvadores’ advantage from the free throw line (60-58), the match stalled on the offensive side. The instructions did not change the dynamics and Olaeta, in two consecutive actions, placed the +5 with 1:51 left (64-59). Íñiguez sought to direct the last attacks, but the upward dynamics of the Basques did not stop, scoring again from the personal line. With an advantage on the scoreboard, the forced shots of the Girona team did not go in, Lointek Gernika prevailing by 72 to 62.
