Spar Girona | Wednesday, 08 October 2025
Spar Girona made their EuroLeague Women 2025-26 debut with a convincing 86-53 victory over VBW Gdynia. Roberto Íñiguez’s team had a great first half, dominating both ends of the court and showing collective strength to secure victory from the first minutes. Despite the Polish reaction at the break, the Girona team managed to maintain control and secure their first European victory of the season in Fontajau.
Great start for Spar Girona and, above all, Mariam Coulibaly, who dominated the area to help the Girona team in the first half of the match (10-3). The visiting team’s timeout did not slow down the dynamics of Spar, who, with points from Jocyte, Holm and Coulibaly, increased their lead (18-7). In the final moments, Amihere scored a three-pointer that closed the quarter (21-9).
With a desire for more, the Girona team not only equalized the intensity on both sides of the court, but also increased it, proposing a very effective choral game in attack to double the score with the actions of Lola, Juste and Carol (42-18). After free throws by Wrzesinski, Íñiguez stopped the clash with forty seconds left in the half. The final play was completed by Holm from mid-distance, leaving a clear 44-20 on the scoreboard at halftime.
The change in the dressing room changed the dynamics of the match. Despite Coulibaly’s points, the Polish team reacted and, despite the local timeout, Gdynia began to close the gap (49-31). That said, Spar reacted again, with an inspired Jocyte deploying its entire offensive arsenal (12 points from Juste) to make it 54-33. Zalewska put VBW back into action, and Pawlowska’s free throws closed the quarter with a score of 56-40.
With Ulan’s free throws, Fontajau got on the ball to encourage the team, going crazy with Quevedo’s triple (59-43). A situation that made Spar react, with Coulibaly scoring from the free throw and Klara taking advantage of the offensive transitions to extend the lead (66-43). Quevedo increased the lead with another outside shot and, after the foul on Carter, the visiting coach stopped the clash (68-45). However, the instructions did not serve to stop the pressure all over the court from the Girona team, who recovered the ball to culminate with an easy basket from Amihere (70-45). With control of the match and a comfortable lead, Roberto Íñiguez’s team managed the last minutes to finally prevail by 86 to 53.
