Girona City Council has approved the authorization of the extended use transfer of the Fontajau Municipal Pavilion in favor of the Girona Basketball Club for the 2025-2026 season. This agreement lays the foundations for the future concession of the pavilion to the entity, consolidating Girona as a benchmark for national and European basketball.

The agreement establishes a transfer for the coming season, with spaces for private and shared use. While the Girona Basketball Club will have exclusive use of the central court of the pavilion, the City Council will maintain the management of the auxiliary court, which will continue to be used mainly by the Fontajau Basketball Club. Events such as the Catalunya Stars Skating Festival, the Girona City Cross, the Sant Silvestre Race, the SeaOtter Europe or the closing of the La Grada Suma project will also continue to use the municipal pavilion facilities.

The mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas i Vilar, highlighted that “Girona basketball is a source of pride for the city and from the city council we want to facilitate everything that promotes its stability and growth, guaranteeing that the rest of the entities can continue with their sports practice in the city.”

For his part, the councilor for Sports and Youth of Girona City Council, Àdam Bertran Martínez, stressed that “adapting to new times, new needs and generating opportunities for everyone, implies advancing in new management models that provide a benefit for everyone. Moving towards a concession allows resources to be released for the rest of the municipal facilities, and at the same time allows Fontajau to make a leap towards professionalization that, otherwise, would be very difficult to do. Cooperation makes and will make all Girona sports benefit and promote”. “We must be careful so that everything that has been taken care of during this time, of care and attention to grassroots sports, to other entities, etc., is maintained in optimal conditions to facilitate that the grassroots sports fabric of Girona, which is first-class, is strengthened with this operation, and that is what we have guaranteed”, he added.

It should be noted that currently, the Girona Basketball Club has a social mass that represents 95% of the maximum capacity of the pavilion (5,200 spectators) and that, following the merger with the UNI Girona Basketball Club that took place in June, it is expected that this volume of members and fans may increase.

With this agreement, the City Council reaffirms its commitment to elite and grassroots sport, and paves the way for the definitive concession of the Fontajau Municipal Pavilion to the Girona Basketball Club, recognizing its sporting, social and economic value for the city.

In addition, Girona City Council will work to ensure that all clubs that currently carry out activities at the Fontajau sports facilities have an alternative agreed upon with them.

The approved authorization is temporary until the definitive concession comes into force, scheduled for the summer of 2026.

The authorization period is from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026 and is exempt from fees in accordance with municipal tax ordinances.

A successful career

In the 2014-2015 season, the Marc Gasol Basketball School Club began its sports project in the city of Girona. At the end of the 2015-2016 season, the name of the entity incorporated the name of the city (Escola Bàsquet Girona Marc Gasol) and from the 2017-2018 season onwards, its name changed to Club Bàsquet Girona 2014.

In the 2017-2018 season, the club had six men’s youth teams and one senior men’s team that competed in the EBA league. In the 2018-19 season, it achieved promotion to the LEB PLATA professional category and in the 2019-20 season, it achieved promotion to the LEB OR professional category. In the 2021-2022 season, Club Bàsquet Girona achieved promotion to the highest professional category at the state level: the league organized by the ACB, where it currently competes.

The club has recently merged with the UNI Girona Basketball Club, an entity with a successful and leading sporting career in the country, which includes achieving important titles in recent years: two national Women’s League championships, a Queen’s Cup, three Super Cups and nine Catalan League titles, in addition to reaching the semi-finals of the European EuroCup competition and playing in the highest continental competition, the EuroLeague Women.

The work carried out by the entity fits in with the strategic objectives of the Girona City Council government, since one of the priorities is the commitment to elite sport and grassroots sports training, as well as social integration.
