PERE PUIG: “WE HAVE THE TEAM WE WANTED”

Spar Girona’s sporting director, Pere Puig, assessed the state of the squad and the preparation for the 2025–26 season this Wednesday. Puig stressed the importance of maintaining the block, the idea of play marked by Roberto Íñiguez and the commitment shown by the players.
“There is one fact that opens our eyes, the match against Casademont Zaragoza on May 4. With a much lower income, the team offered one of the best matches of the season. The players show us their involvement and desire to fight for the shield. It was clear to us that we had to maintain the block with the idea of the game and the purpose of making a competitive team that captivates the fans. All the players we have signed are first options. We have the team we wanted to have.”
Puig also highlighted the philosophy of play that is being consolidated under the direction of Roberto Íñiguez: “We want to create a dynamic game where any player has options to attack and feel comfortable. We are looking for Coulibaly to help us, but we are not looking for a reference: we are looking for everyone to complement each other within Roberto’s idea of play.”
He also highlighted the coach’s character and the group’s commitment: “We want to compete. It’s still a short squad to face both competitions, but it’s the squad we want.”
Regarding the title options and the role of favorite, the sports director has been clear: “We are not (the favorites). But it doesn’t matter. The idea is to try to compete and fight for the titles, and above all to try to give a good show. People expect us to give a good show, we know that they are looking forward to it very much.”
Finally, he valued the work with the training players: “The three years of collaboration we have had are bearing fruit, but the leap to the Women’s League is very big. There are junior and cadet players who do the pre-season with the first team, but we don’t want to put pressure on them.”
As for the pending arrivals, Canella will join next week, Carter will do so after the 3×3 (at the latest on September 16 or 17) and Bibby will join the team once her participation in the WNBA ends.
