Spar Girona begins its journey in the EuroLeague Women 2025-26 tomorrow (8:00 p.m.) with the first match of the group stage (Group A) against the Polish VBW Gdynia. Coach Roberto Íñiguez expressed his satisfaction at competing in Europe again: “For me, I am very happy to be able to play in the Euroleague with Spar Girona after so many years. I hope to have a great competition and I am very excited to do well. We have to raise the level of toughness and maintain the pace as long as possible.”
VBW Gdynia comes to Girona as a rival with a lot of experience in Europe and a squad with players of proven level. Íñiguez highlighted their ability to compete at a high pace: “They are very dangerous in the open field, we will have to be very good in defense during the first seconds, control the rebound well and have solidity in defense.”
The Polish team retains references from last season such as Rebekah Jones and Ruthy Hebard, two of their most decisive players. In the same vein, Lola Pendande added: “They are a team that likes to run, a bit like us.”
The Girona team and Gdynia have faced each other on several occasions in Europe, with a favorable record for Spar Girona (3-1). The last precedent dates back to the 2022-23 season, when the Girona team defeated Fontajau and Poland in the group stage.
With the support of Fontajau, Íñiguez highlights the importance of building a solid identity as a local team: “It is important to be strong at home, being very humble but also ambitious. We have the ambition to beat any opponent. We will try to make a hole among the favorites.”
The coach also recalled that Spar Girona comes to the competition with a less experienced squad than other teams in the group. Only Klara Holm, Juste Jocyte, Laura Quevedo and Arica Carter have played in the EuroLeague Women before. “The opponent has a lot of experience in this competition and we don’t have that much. We have to demand it from ourselves. I don’t like the format because there are people who don’t understand it. We have to make it simpler,” Roberto highlighted.
Spar Girona will look to start on a good foot in front of their home crowd and recover the European magic that has always characterized Euroleague nights in Fontajau.
