Rubbing the impossible

The senior lost after coming close to rallying from a 24-point deficit

| Sunday, 14 April 2019

Basketball Girona fell at Pabellón A Raña de Marín after the first 30 minutes behind the scoreboard in a wide way and a last quarter in which everything could have happened. Àlex Formento’s men started on a bad foot, receiving a partial that put them at a disadvantage early on, but which they managed to recover from the triple in the last ten minutes.

The senior managed to open the can with two baskets that put the first partial in the game. The rival responded with the sharp Vassil Fernandez (16 points and 8 rebounds) from the paint and the explosiveness of Taiwo Badmus (17 points and 11 rebounds). The balance between both teams would be maintained until Marín would break it with a 22-0 run, showing great inspiration from the triple – five in the first quarter -. The senior would respond with two triples at the end of the first ten minutes. In the second quarter, the tonic would be maintained, ending with a difference similar to the one that had ended the first period but with a different script. While Marín held on to its outside play and defensive ability, led by Jordan Gregory (15 points) and Gerard Sevillano (26 rating), the senior climbed points with the second unit.

In the second half, they would start imposing the defenses with a partial 10-8 with three minutes left to end the period, which would end with 17-12. Previously, Marín had achieved the maximum advantage (67-43, 29′), a difference that the senior would cut significantly in the last ten minutes. These would open with five consecutive points from Sergi Costa, three of which would be from beyond 6.75. It would be the first of the six triples that the senior would make during the last period, three from the inspiration of Henry Bolton – top scorer with 15 points. The last of them would propel the team to a difference of six points (76-70) which Jordi Trias would push to five with less than a minute to go. With no time to complete the feat, Marín would extend the result to 82-72 from the free throw.

The next Girona Basketball match is next Sunday, April 21 at 7 p.m. against Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea at the Fontajau Pavilion.
