Spar Girona has opened the second phase of the EuroLeague Women with a valuable victory in Fontajau against Famila Schio ( 81 to 72 ), in a high-level duel that has shown the solidity of the Girona team and the competitive intensity of the current Italian champion. Roberto Íñiguez’s team has managed the key moments, imposing pace, defending with judgment and showing collective success to take home a weighty victory.
Clear initial offensive by Famila Schio, controlling the zone with Shepard and differentiating themselves from long distance with Laksa and Verona (2 to 8). Conde then assumed offensive responsibility and, despite the points from Jocyte, Carter and Coulibaly, the Italians achieved +10 with the basket from Keys and the 2+1 from Verona (7 to 17). From here, Spar Girona increased their defensive intensity and Jocyte and Coulibaly took on the offensive weight of the Girona team (15 to 17). In addition, Amihere’s transition imposed a 10 to 0 run that forced Lapeña to stop the clash (17 to 17). Despite the break, our defensive intensity was maintained, and Spar closed the quarter with a two-point advantage after the baskets from Amihere and Pendande (21 to 19).
Once again, in the opening period, the Italians came out strong thanks to their success from the personal line, and the excess of fouls led Schio to take a two-point lead (25 to 27). Despite regaining momentum with Amihere, Shepard and André’s baskets caused a timeout by Íñiguez (27 to 31). The reaction was not long in coming and Spar regained momentum on both sides of the court, stopping the Italian attack and Coulibaly scoring his chances to put the team ahead again (34 to 33). Schio’s response was slow and Jocyte, with a 2+1, and Mariam, with a basket from mid-range, put our team ahead (39 to 33). Immediately afterwards, Keys’ triple and Conde’s pass to the hoop put Lapeña back within one point (39 to 38).
After the locker room, Spar grew again with Laeticia leading the attack, scoring under the basket and from long distance (44 to 38). Víctor’s timeout did not stop our clear offense which, at the pace of Coulibaly and with a three-pointer by Quevedo, put us 10 points ahead (54 to 44). From that moment on, the game stalled and the aggressive defenses stood out, with Schio gradually getting closer (56 to 50). But in a three and nothing, Spar once again prevailed in attack and a shot by Juste and Carter put the Girona team 10 points ahead again (60 to 50). However, the third quarter was a bit long for us, and Conde brought the Italians closer (62 to 57).
Despite Canella’s shots, Schio, on the rise, partly due to Conde’s offensive dominance, was only three points behind (64 to 61). Once again, the Girona team made efforts to maintain the advantage, imposing a 6 to 1 set (70 to 62). But the Italians came closer again and, with Zandalasini’s free throw and Verona’s triple, were only four points behind (70 to 66). With Conde leading the Italian attack, Amihere did it for Spar Girona, making efforts to maintain control of the game, but after Maria’s free throws, Íñiguez called a timeout with 1:54 left (74 to 70). Roberto’s directions were precise and Quevedo, from three, and Mariam, under the basket, widened the difference, replicating the Lapeña timeout (79 to 70). In the next action, Amihere recovered the ball and Roberto stopped the game again to lead the last 51.8 seconds. Arica’s free throws gave peace of mind, and Spar Girona prevailed over Fontajau by 81 to 72.
