The two decades of Uni Girona’s life will forever be compiled in the book “Uni Girona: 20 years of basketball and successes” that was presented today at the Valvi Foundation. It is the work of the Head of Sports and Culture of the Diari de Girona, Jordi Roura, who participated in the event alongside the president, Cayetano Pérez, and the sports director, Pere Puig, one of the founders. Among the fifty attendees were also the president of Bàsquet Girona, Marc Gasol, the club with which Uni merged last summer; the historic sponsor through the Spar brand, Joaquim Vidal; the former president of Uni, Llorenç Biargé; the General Manager of Bàsquet Girona, Xus Escosa, the Sports delegate of the Generalitat, Narcís Casassa, and the delegate of FCBQ, Xavier Santaló, among others.

“When Jordi told us he had an idea to write our chronology, we said yes from the start. It’s nice to have it written, because we have been pioneers in many things. I was going through the book and saying, wow, it’s true, this happened. I encourage everyone to buy it and have a souvenir, at home, of the club’s history,” explained president Cayetano Pérez. The work, with 264 pages and more than 200 photographs, mostly by Diari de Girona photographers Aniol Resclosa, Marc Martí and David Aparicio, will be on sale in the Uni store, also on match days, and on the entity’s website, next week.

Pere Puig, for his part, said that “I love the book, it captures the essence of twenty years. I read many of them, and it’s not easy to do. The essence is summed up in two things: generosity, because at one time two entities (Vedruna and Seset) that couldn’t see each other reached an agreement to work together. There are many people behind these twenty years. Directors and sponsors who have moved because they believed in all this. And the institutions, of course. Remember that we are talking about 2005. We had to fight and it wasn’t easy. This is the other characteristic: our struggle”. He also highlighted that “I am moved that there is a brief recognition of Josep Xargay and Vicenç Bordas, who unfortunately cannot experience the current successes”.

In turn, journalist Jordi Roura explained that “I have to be grateful to Pere and Cayetano, because the project was born with them. I wanted a written legacy of the Uni summary to remain and taking advantage of the twenty years, with the merger on the table with Bàsquet Girona, it was a good time to move forward.” Roura explained that “we have focused on the different adventures of each season. With the archive work, I have remembered things that I had forgotten. There have been very critical moments: every summer, at the beginning, the feasibility of continuing the following season was studied. The lowest classification is a fifth place, Uni has always been a leading team. And how many moments it has experienced: above all, the first league with Roberto Íñiguez, on April 23, 2015. Fontajau exploded that day with more than 5,000 spectators, which forced the doors of the pavilion to be closed in a duel decreed with free admission.
