UNI FALLS IN LYON AND SAYS FAREWELL FROM THE WOMEN'S EUROCUP

Spar Girona | Thursday, 27 February 2025

One of those days when nothing comes of it. Spar Girona fell decisively in the second leg of the EuroCup Women quarter-finals against ASVEL, with a score of 72 to 51. The Girona team did not find their rhythm in attack and accumulated errors that the French team took advantage of to open up the gap from the first minutes. Despite attempts to react, ASVEL imposed their rhythm and certified the elimination of Uni.

No luck

A strong start from the French team, with an inspired Jocyte from long range, leading Lyon with eight initial points that put ASVEL ahead in the playoffs (10-4). Malonga extended the gap with another triple, but an outside shot by Bibby and an action by Mack from mid-range brought Uni closer (13-9). The Girona team tried to close the gap, but the basket was too small for them, missing simple shots, a situation that the locals took advantage of to open a gap (20-11). With Roberto’s adjustments, Guerrero scored in transition, Harris punished under the basket and Bibby closed the quarter with a triple on the horn (22-16).

18 to 10

With the change of quarter, Uni’s mistakes continued, and a 9-0 run made ASVEL increase the gap even further (Quevedo’s entry, two actions by Wojta and a triple by Harris, 31-16). Roberto stopped the game and Mack broke the run (31-19), but a triple by Pasa and another by Harris put the score at +18. Bibby responded with a fadeaway (37-19), which forced the home coach to stop the game. Ygueravide punished from long distance, but a transition by Malonga made it 39-24. Sandra then scored both free throws, but a foul on the Spar horn led Quevedo to score one free throw out of three possible, leaving the score at 40-26.

Hard hit on the scoreboard

Ygueravide scored a good goal just before the second half began, but Lyon came back into the game, scoring three in a row to reach the maximum margin of the match (triple by Wojta, 2+1 by Harris, triple by Jocyte, triple by Pasa and free throw by Wojta, 53-32). Finally, Uni found a solution by attacking under the basket, with Bibby and Lundquist taking advantage of their options (53-36). Without much time to react, Jocyte punished again from the free throw line and the last attacks by both teams did not end in the basket (55-36).

With ten minutes to go, Malonga scored two consecutive baskets to finally decide the match, if it wasn’t already (59-36). Bibby and Mack cut the gap (59-41), but the match turned into a basket exchange in which Lyon emerged clearly victorious, winning 72 to 51.
