Spar Girona writes a new golden page in its history: victory against Ensino Lugo (83-67) and first position in the regular league for the first time . Roberto Íñiguez’s team culminates an exceptional regular phase, and this success also gives them a direct ticket to play, again, in the EuroLeague Women. With a full and vibrant Fontajau, the Girona team imposed rhythm, character and talent in a duel that ended in celebration by the fans.

With Fontajau almost full and committed from Klara’s first basket, the mistakes and rushes in attack gave a clear opportunity to the Galicians, who turned the situation around thanks to the points of Castedo and Howard from long distance (4-10). Roberto stopped it quickly, and Tate broke the set from the free throw line. In defense, the Girona team pressed all over the court to surprise Lugo, but after a successful defensive action, Soriano punished again from the three-point line and from the free throw (8-15). Mack, under the basket, and Bibby gave our team some air, but the final offensive rushes and the success from the personal line of the Galicians put the score at 13-21.

With the change of quarter, Roberto’s instructions took effect, and from a good defense, Uni has been getting closer thanks to a three-pointer by Guerrero and baskets by Tate and Canella (20-23). Imani has tied the game with a three-pointer (23-23), and Guerrero has culminated a great transition to advance the Girona team (25-23). Despite the visiting timeout, Uni has maintained the offensive rhythm with a vertical and choral game, but the Galicians have come closer again with Soriano’s 13 points (31-31). Then, Bibby, after an offensive rebound, has not forgiven under the basket, but Howard has responded with a three-pointer that has forced Roberto to stop the game 22 seconds before the break (33-34). With a great final play, Hristova has replicated the three-pointer and has allowed Uni to go to the break with a +2 (36-34).

The change of pace radically changed the image of the Girona team, who increased their defensive intensity and stood out thanks to their success from the triple. A triple by Bibby, a basket by Mack and another triple by Bobi put Uni ahead by +10 (44-34). With Lugo’s timeout, the visitors stopped the half with an action by Soriano after an offensive rebound, but Bibby responded again from long distance (47-36). Soriano herself, intractable in attack, pulled the cart and brought the Galicians closer to seven points, but Chloe’s free throws gave the Girona team some air (49-40). However, the great image of the first minutes began to fade in the final stretch of the quarter: the offensive block and the bonus against allowed Ensino to be only three points behind (49-46). An unsportsmanlike foul by Fequiere (with shots by Tate) culminated in a three-pointer by Bobi, and then Bibby punished again from outside (57-48). However, Howard responded with quality and Castedo’s free throws adjusted the score again (57-52). With 24 seconds left in the third quarter, Roberto called a timeout to prepare for the last attack, and Bibby did not miss his opportunity (59-52).

Shortly before the end, the last quarter began with a fierce fight in the zone, where Muhate scored for Lugo and Mack and Sandra responded for Uni (63-54). Wanting more and with a Fontajau totally committed, Canella culminated a transition with a basket and an extra shot (66-54). Muhate and Mack continued the pulse under the basket, and another counterattack, this time completed by Sandra, placed +14 on the scoreboard (70-56). Garrido stopped the Girona run, but two baskets by Klara once again made the Fontajau stands burst into joy (75-59). With the game at stake, Uni did not relax the pressure and managed the final minutes to end up beating Ensino by 83-67.
