The team almost overcame a nineteen-point deficit with a good collective role
Basketball Girona lost in the last minute against TAU Castelló in Fontajau (72-74). The team from Girona was behind the scoreboard throughout the game but in the last quarter managed to turn around an unfavorable difference of nineteen points with a great performance on both sides of the court. Biram Faye in defense and Aleix Font in attack captained a final match with a great collective response.
The first elections of the game have started with a higher defensive pace than the offensive (6-9, 6′). A three-pointer by Pep Busquets equalized after Castellon’s initiative at the start (9-9). The rival team was turning to put ahead with a partial 2-8 that culminated in the last possession (11-17).
The attacks dominated the second period (partial 24-23), with the fine wrist of Olaf Schaftenaar (8 points in the second quarter) and for the Castellon part the interior Dukan appeared both inside and outside. The initiative has always fallen to the rival side and a triple by Aleix Font in Girona’s last possession has placed the minimum of five points before the break (35-40).
In the restart, Castelló hit the first three-point shot, the prelude to a great run of 24 points that seemed to put victory on track. Good defenses and successful attacks have catapulted the team from Castellón to end the period with a maximum of nineteen points (45-64).
However, the team has re-emerged in the last ten extraordinary minutes defensively and offensively, with constant collective efforts and two names of their own: Biram Faye in defense and Aleix Font from the three-pointer (17 points in total). The good dynamic has regenerated Girona’s hopes, with the possibility of winning in the last possession of 4 seconds, which ended up wandering with two points below (72-74).
Statements by Carlos Marco:
“I am very happy for the reaction of the team. The group played very well in the last ten minutes. With some mistakes in attack but good defensive intensity, giving everything, leaving a team that had 60 points conceded with 70. The feelings were very good at the end and this is what we have to do. Try to maintain this activity, which is what we have in training, especially from the beginning.”
