The senior picks up his sixth straight win in a decisive first-half finish
The people from Girona achieved their sixth victory in six games after a less-than-plus encounter with a more stable second half on the scoreboard. A partial 0-12 before the break meant the first maximum difference for Girona, who would not lose the baton until the end. Víctor Moreno (25 points, 10/12 field goals and 33 rating) emerged as a leader with three three-pointers from three attempts at the end of the second quarter and eleven points in the third period.
The home team took the first advantage with a basket inside and made the first difference with the first of the four triples that would make the first period (8-4, 3′). The senior answered from the paint, with Menno Dijkstra (6 points) and Gerard Sevillano (5), and also beyond the 6’75 from Sàbat (2 triples). Villarrobledo responded forcefully inside and did not let the Girona team go (20-20).
The second quarter began with two triples by each team that kept the tie but Villarrobledo would take care of breaking it. The instinct of DeAngelo Hailey would start to add up in Girona territory and Villarrobledo maintained the advantage from the collective work on both sides of the court. However, there was nothing he could do against the storm outside that would eventually fall on top of him. A partial 0-12 in less than two minutes, with four consecutive three-pointers (three by Víctor Moreno and one by Sàbat), would break the small differences between the locals and the visitors and place the first Girona maximum before entering the dressing room (38- 45).
In the second half, the men led by Àlex Formento maintained agility in the offensive transition, being decisive both inside and outside. Unlike the first few minutes, the locals have responded from the paint without being able to cut any differences. Beyond the tactical aspect, Víctor Moreno stood out who, after closing the first half in an extraordinary way, scored eleven points and prevented the distance from falling below ten points. For Villarrobledo, DeAngelo Hailey stood out, leading in directing and scoring (58-72).
A 10-2 run put the locals in the game for the first time after the break (68-74, 34′). However, five consecutive points from Girona restored the lead to over ten. In the final minutes, the senior came from behind, maintaining the gap and adding the sixth victory in six games (83-92).
The senior’s next match is next Saturday in Fontajau against Torrons Vicens CB L’Hospitalet at 7pm.
*Statements by Àlex Formento
“It was a complicated game in which we had to be careful in its development. In the first half I think we managed to maintain the physical demands of the opponent and the success of Hailey. The second half followed the same line, with dynamics for both teams.”
“Broadly speaking, we knew how to face the game with seriousness and an agile and participatory basketball that forced the opponent to make great efforts. Although one player stood out, the team’s choral work was excellent and I I left satisfied to have done a good job on one of the most difficult tracks in the competition.”
