"Being a club volunteer is a unique opportunity to enter the world of basketball"

Interview with Miquel Fuentes, one of the club's first volunteers

Miquel Fuentes joined the club when it was founded, in 2014, as a volunteer. I was 17 years old. A year later, he is one of the senior assistant coaches. The passion for basketball has marked his journey at the club, but the predisposition and motivation have made the people in charge especially value his work.

What were your concerns before volunteering?

Mainly because I was and am a basketball fanatic. As a child I had gone to see Akasvayu with my father and when I saw that the club was born, I wanted to be a part of it. At the time, the CAFE degree was starting and Jesús Escosa, a member of the club’s founding team, was teaching there, whom I contacted telling him that I would like to contribute to the project in whatever way it was. He told me that my tasks would be as a volunteer on the weekends and I agreed because I wanted to join the club.

What kept you going the first year?

As a fan of this sport, my dedication has always been full in my work at the club. Although I put in many hours as a volunteer, it made me happy to participate in a project related to basketball. Now I have a very exciting and ambitious challenge in which I am learning a lot and which allows me to work in what I had always dreamed of doing. However, the predisposition has always been at the root of my passion.

What would you say to someone who wants to volunteer? 

I think the most important aspect a volunteer should have is to have an innate attraction to what they want to contribute to. Be it basketball or any other space. If you are a volunteer at the club you will be able to see good basketball, be involved in a club that is growing and be part of a hospitable human group that will always offer you a helping hand when you need it. In a few words, it is an opportunity to be part of a large-scale project, surrounded by a basketball and learning atmosphere in which you will surely enjoy a lot.
