Básquet Girona has achieved another victory at home against Ilerdauto Nissan Pardinyes Lleida (84-62). The match started very evenly but, after the break, the senior tipped the scales with an excellent job on both sides of the court (44-20). The performance of Víctor Moreno (23 points, 3 rebounds and 4 recoveries), especially in the last quarter, was the most accentuated in another episode of collective spirit from Girona, with Sàbat, Menno, Hester and Sevillano surpassing or approaching the twenty rating points. The rebound was once again one of the aspects that brought the senior closer to victory (41 to 27).

Five consecutive points from Sevillano started the match, with the senior getting the maximum advantage in the third minute (9-3). However, the script of the first period has developed in the balance in the game and the score between both sets. While the Girona team has been strong in the paint (8 points from Menno Dijkstra) the Lleida team has added from the outside (5/9 triples). The first round was won by the visiting team, four points up (19-23).

In the second ten minutes, the locals stepped up their defense and caused the opponent to score only two points in the opening five minutes, with nine added in their favor (28-25). The opponent responded with a 0-7 run that put them ahead of the scoreboard again. But the senior would not fold his arms and, with five points in a row, restored the tie on the scoreboard. A Lleida basket tipped the balance before the changing rooms (40-42).

In the second half, the team from Girona gave the game an important boost. He started with an 11-0 run that put him nine points up and, despite the 0-6 against, another decisive run (13-2) would increase the difference to twelve points. The collective solidarity on both sides of the court, both on their own – ten points conceded -, and on the rival’s – Sàbat 7 points and Hester 6, the most outstanding -, would leave the game well faced for victory (64 -52).

In the fourth quarter, the senior left the opponent with ten points again, as in the third period, and exhibited in the offensive section, where Víctor Moreno, author of ten points, who ended up being the player, stood out most outstanding of the party. Àlex Formento has given a few minutes for seniors Adrià Moncanut and Ferran Díaz. If the former scored the last basket in the last game at home, this time it was the latter’s turn, closing the lead to 22 points (84-62).

*Statements by Àlex Formento

“The match had an intensity that we expected because Pardinyes is competing in an extraordinary way. We conceded too many points, ending the second quarter with 42 points against: we wanted to dominate from the defense and we couldn’t. The opposite happened in the second half, when we did have this tension, initiative, this ability to make the opponent’s game uncomfortable. From there, we managed to have a fluid game, move well from defense to attack and find free kicks that allowed us to have an extraordinary second half. Effort, reading and being the team we have been, of which we are so proud”

“The rebound, the success from the free kick… these are parameters that tell you how you are on the court. From the rebound, getting second chances and, just as or more importantly, not giving up second chances. We must continue to comply in these aspects because it helps us a lot”
