First win of the year

The senior wins against Villarrobledo in Fontajau and enters the promotion phase

| Saturday, 11 January 2020

Básquet Girona is a team in the promotion phase after beating CB Villarobledo in Fontajau (81-73). An even first half led to a second half dominated by Girona from the defense. Albert Sàbat, 20 points and 21 rating, Gerard Sevillano – 16 points, 10 rebounds and 27 rating – and Antonio Hester, 13 points and 18 rating, have provided leadership in the direction and determination in the paint.

The first ten minutes of the match were played in an even match scenario. In fact, both teams have succeeded in the same field goal chances they have had (5/8 of 2 and 3/8 of 3) while the free kick has favored the balance -3/3 for the home team and 2/3 for visitor- (22-21).

In the second period, the senior began to be superior in the scoreboard and in the feelings of the match. From the rebound and the recovery, it slightly broke the balanced inertia (30-23) but the Villarrobledo team answered with a partial 2-10 that put them back in front. The back-and-forth scenario was interrupted by two consecutive triples by the local team that allowed them to go to the dressing room with an advantage, with Albert Sàbat serving as captain -13 points and 16 ratings- (47-42).

In the resumption, the senior increased the distance in favor of his identity: the defense. The team has been strong without the ball, with 4 recoveries and only 12 points against. In attack, Gerard Sevillano’s individual performance, scoring half of the team’s points and adding 16 points, was the difference (63-54).

A three-pointer by Herbert Graham started the last quarter -66-53-, establishing the first maximum of thirteen points, which would be repeated after a 2+1 on a fade by Menno Dijkstra (73-60). Five points in a row from Villarrobledo have resituated the distance to eight points, the maximum they would manage to cut until the final result. Thus, the senior would achieve the first victory of 2020 as a local (81-73).

The first game and the first victory of the year coincided with the debut of the legendary Engaviats animation group, which has returned to the stands of Fontajau twelve years later.

The next senior game is on Saturday, January 18 at 8 p.m. at Torrons Vicens CB L’Hospitalet.

Statements Alex Formento:

“First of all, congratulations to our team, at Básquet Girona, not for the victory, but for the effort and dedication in the game. Thank you to everyone who came to Fontajau to join us, we had a good afternoon of basketball. Then, focusing on the game, in the first half, I’m very happy because we recovered ball movement and a bit of freshness that we were lacking recently. But we have lacked defensive consistency and the lack of regularity in actions that we had trained has punished us a lot, which have not turned out as we expected.”

“In the second half, although we lost offensive consistency, we adjusted the defense better. The third quarter, excellent. We were more comfortable and were able to dominate more. When you’re at a point in the season where you’re missing that spark that we’ve been missing lately, we’ve never lost the work, the faith and the confidence. I don’t think we’ve lost it, on the contrary. We are happy to continue working, rest tomorrow and think about the next game on Monday.”

“It is a source of satisfaction for the team and the club to be the first LEB Plata team to play the promotion phase to LEB Gold in the next part of the season. Therefore, we are very satisfied and proud of this team and everyone around them, who are protagonists and are helping us achieve things.”
