The team imposed their game in the final minutes to take the second victory in three days
Basketball Girona has achieved its second victory in three days after a very competitive match in Madrid (73-77). The balance on the scoreboard at half-time was decided in favor of the Madrid side at the restart. But a sensational final quarter from Girona on both sides of the court has put the visitors on course for victory. Pep Busquets has re-established himself as the leader in scoring (21 points) under the direction of Sàbat and an increasingly solid collective image.
The first quarter took place in a back-and-forth scenario with a high percentage of hits by both teams. While the Girona team has been the one that has had the most initiative in the electronic, especially from the triple (5/9 with a representative performance by Pep Busquets -9 points-), the local team has been nourished by the his activity in painting -14 out of 23 points- (23-26).
In the second period there were moments for both teams. The first to be protagonists were the Girona, who extended the difference with the first maximum of ten points (25-35). Then it was Canoe’s turn, which cut back to 31-35 but the team led by Carles Marco pulled back the lead (35-42) before Canoe equalized in the last minute (42-42).
The first period of the resumption was Madrid’s (21-12). The yellows got to +8 in the first minutes and +9 at the end of the quarter (63-54) but three Girona points in the last plays slightly reduced the advantage after the good staging of the local team on both sides of the court.
The last ten minutes, however, have been Girona’s. The team showed itself in attack, with good circulation and a good percentage in the shot, and made a brutal physical deployment in defense 48 hours after the victory against Granada. This has allowed them to move forward after tying at 68 points and no longer relinquish the initiative on the scoreboard in the last few minutes whose sensitivity from the perimeter has been key to sealing the second victory in 48 hours (73-77 ).
Statements by Carlos Marco:
“A difficult match as we expected. I’m happy for the win because scoring is always important but I’m not happy with how we’ve been. The first three quarters gave us 62 points. They ran, they touched the paint, they made easy baskets and we lost balls. We held on for the first twenty minutes because we were right but we needed to take a step forward which in the end we did in the end and were able to get the win. But we have to do the basic things better if we want to keep winning.”
“We defended more, they were not as vertical in the direct blocking, we controlled Toolson better and closed the rebound well. With that we managed to only score 11 points in the last quarter.”
