Spar Girona falls with their heads held high against Fenerbahçe

Spar Girona has shown its ambition and character in a historic EuroLeague semi-final against Fenerbahçe. Far from cowering before the champion, the Girona team has managed a first quarter to take the lead (12-17), defending with a suffocating intensity and attacking without any complexes to dream of the feat. Although the talent and depth of the Turkish bench have ended up imposing their rhythm, the Girona team has made efforts to get back into the game, ultimately losing by 76 to 59.
As is normal in a new experience, the initial nerves took their toll in the first half of the game, but Allemand’s basket was answered with the first free throws from Holm and a basket from Mariam (2-4). The exchanges were constant throughout the first quarter and Spar took the lead at several points, highlighting Bibby’s triple, Jocyte’s entry and Lola’s final 2+1 to close the period (12-17).
With the change of quarter, the basket became small for the Girona team and Meesseman and Rupert imposed a 4-0 lead (16-17). Two passes by Çakir put the Turks ahead again (20-17) and the success of Meesseman, Rupert and Williams allowed Fenerbahçe to open a gap (26-17). With Roberto’s instructions, Klara took the offensive lead for Spar, but Meesseman’s physical superiority took its toll (32-22). Rupert increased the lead to +15, but a three-pointer by Juste and an offensive rebound by Bibby put the team back within ten points at halftime (37-27).
With the instructions for the break, Spar Girona changed the chip and improved positively in attack, with Mariam, Klara and Bibby taking advantage of their options (42-35). Uzun became the protagonist to distance the locals again and, then, Gabby Williams’ shots placed the maximum difference (52-38). Although Carol scored in the final action to make it 52 to 40, Rupert quickly answered under the basket to close the quarter (54-40).
In the last period, Bibby’s offensive success (16 points) allowed Girona to get closer, but Gabby Williams and Uzun’s triple celebration increased the lead to 65-48. With 7:16 left, Íñiguez stopped the clash to lead the last minutes of Spar. Mariam’s actions, Carol’s triple and Klara’s entry made it -15, forcing Méndez to stop the clock with 4:22 left (70-55). Ainhoa closed the gap from the free throw line (70-57), but with the difference already consolidated on the scoreboard, Fenerbahçe ended up winning by 76 to 59.
