Basketball Girona defeats the leader Murcia with a very complete game from the whole team (58-71)
The Catalans were ahead on the scoreboard in the middle of the first period and never lost the advantage. Good overall defensive work and points from Trias, Cizmic, Angelats and Bolton – 45 between them all – were the keys to the victory.
The start of the match was an exchange of baskets by the two teams. From the equator of the first quarter, the Murcians were imprecise in the launch. On the contrary, a disciplined and concentrated Basketball Girona took the first differences thanks to the second opportunities achieved through the load of the offensive rebound and the points of a successful Henry Bolton (13 – 19 minute 10).
In the second period, Quim Costa’s men remained comfortable on court and four points from Cizmic plus two triples, one from Bolton and one from Sergi Costa, gave the electronic side the maximum advantage (23 – 33 minute 16). However, the team from Murcia inflicted a partial 7-0 that equalized the score again. A minor foul after a three-pointer in the last second by Nil Angelats allowed the Girona players to go to the break with a slight margin in favor (30 – 36).
At the restart, two almost consecutive three-pointers by Danish baseman Frederik Nielsen reduced the lead to just three points (38 – 41 minute 23). However, Básquet Girona did not get nervous, and with excellent ball circulation and outside success – three triples in this quarter -, they closed the third act with a new maximum difference thanks to another triple in the last instant of Bolton (40 – 52).
In the last assault, however, the Murcians did not throw in the towel and a partial 9-0 in favor of the locals, once again left the game wide open (51-56 minute 35). Despite this, the Catalan team knew how to control the tempo of the game very well and, with a final carousel of free kicks, certified a well-deserved victory.
With this victory, Básquet Girona has a 6-5 record. The next match will be in Fontajau, Saturday the 8th at seven in the afternoon against the leader HLA Alicante.
*Quim Costa’s assessment
“We imposed a good rhythm and dominated slightly throughout the match. We were aware that they had good shooters and we had to minimize this potential and lower their percentage which in general we achieved. In attack we had more pause than in the last matches, knowing how to assess where we could have better chances to score”
“Although we started well, a week ago we broke a streak of four consecutive defeats. There were moments of insecurity and distrust but now that we have recovered the good dynamics of results, I hope that the team will feel better about the court and this allows us greater fluidity and a slightly faster basketball that we are not getting now”
