"We will work to be among the best"

The sports director, Àlex Formento, positively assesses the pre-season of the senior and sees him ready to compete in LEB Plata

The Girona Básquet senior will make his debut this Friday at LEB Plata, on the HLA Alicante court (8:45 p.m.). Àlex Formento, who this year is in his second season as sporting director of the first team, was in charge of making the squad. In the pre-season, the team was runner-up in the Catalan League LEB Plata.

-What is your assessment of the preparation?

“Positive. We have played against teams of different levels and categories, and this has helped us to be able to see the players in different positions and different roles. As was usual last season, we have focused the matches from work, forgetting about the result. We actually dosed the players and they all ended up playing more or less the same. We felt it was important to see how they developed in the pre-season because now, when the league starts, we can put each one where we feel they will perform better”.

-The entire coaching staff and four players from last season remain.

“This line of continuity is essential because it serves us to transfer to the new arrivals not only how we play on the court, but also the values ​​and the character of the club, on and off the court. We have tried to find a balance in which the more weight should be on youth and 20 to 30 percent of the squad should be the more experienced players. We are happy with the group we have and now we are waiting to close the squad. We are missing at least one more player.”

-When will this last piece arrive?

“Now that we know the squad better, we have to find the player who can help us the most. And, in this sense, it’s better to wait a little longer and get it right than to bring someone now who doesn’t quite fit the needs of the team. So it will come when we find it. It could be this week or later.”

-The debut is very demanding, in Alicante.

“Whatever the conditions, our idea is always to go to all the fields to compete and try to win the game. We know that Alicante is a very complicated opponent, with the clear objective of promotion. Last season , he came close to it, in the fifth game of the final. Therefore, it will be a performance of the highest demands and will serve to test us, even though we are still under construction.”

-With what goal do you start?

“We are more focused on the day-to-day than looking at the long term, but we will work to be among the best. Our main goal is to make a cheerful and modern basketball, and at the same time we have the ambition that these aspects lead us to finish in the top six in this first phase and be in the top group. And, if possible, to get results that allow us to aspire to everything in the next phase.”
