FIATC Girona has started the preseason on a good footing after overcoming Cheshire Phoenix in Platja d’Aro (93-77). The team led by Moncho Fernández has completed a very serious match, showing a great pace of play and good collective solidity to claim the first victory of the preparation.
The match began with an intense exchange of blows and a very vertical game by Moncho Fernández’s team, coming into contact with five base players on the court at various times. That said, the Cheshire Phoenix’s outside success closed the first quarter in favor of the British (23-26). Halfway through the second period, with the score tied at 31, the Girona team stepped on the accelerator: a recital by Martinas Geben in the paint —author of 16 points in the first half— led a devastating set to gain a maximum distance of +15 (50-35) and leave for the locker room with a favorable 50-38.
In the second half, FIATC Girona maintained the same solid line and continued to widen the gap. The good work of the base allowed them to find comfortable attacking situations, with outstanding minutes for Joan Esqueu —author of seven consecutive points— and the leadership of Mac McClung to close the third quarter clearly ahead (76-52). In the last ten minutes, Moncho Fernández’s team finished closing the match from the outside line with a great role for Sergi Martínez, author of three consecutive three-pointers that definitively distanced the Girona team. Pep Busquets’ final shot maintained the advantage and the match ended with the youth of the youth team on the court (93-77).
